Taking care of mom and dad while juggling work

With thousands of West Virginians turning 60 every month, many baby boomers and others are struggling to care for aging parents while working, and sometimes, even raising grandchildren. Without proper care options, too many West Virginians are forced to leave the workforce.

As WV Women Moving Forward addresses workforce barriers, eldercare issues have risen to the top of the list. Thanks to AARP West Virginia’s Associate State Director for Advocacy, Angela Vance, for helping to lead the effort. Angela has outlined how struggles with care for aging adults and adults with disabilities is straining West Virginia’s workforce.

"While nearly 300,000 family caregivers are providing complex care every day in West Virginia, ranging from preparing special diets to performing medical tasks, these responsibilities often take time away from their workplace or constantly shift their work schedule," said Vance. "We need to do more to support these family caregivers."
