Exploring concerted efforts to improve elder care resources so loved ones can get to work
With a continued focus on dependent care, this month WV Forward and partners are marking concerted efforts to look at elder care resources. A special thanks to AARP West Virginia for hosting the latest WV Women Moving Forward meeting on dependent care as we pinpoint elder care needs and resources that help caregivers and loved ones get to work.
As we collaborate with groups like AARP West Virginia, local employers, nonprofits, EDAs among many others, they consistently point to accessible dependent care as a great need to fill, not only to support current employees, but also to recruit new talent. It has been reported that Dr. Albert Wright, President and CEO of WVU Health System, has also recently emphasized that dependent care is a major decision making factor in recruiting new talent. In response, the WVU Health System has tried to step up and help with those needs.
Conversations about this issue are spreading statewide. NPR broke a story over the weekend, "'It’s Just Really Hard’- Families and Caregivers Struggle to Find Resources Inside Appalachia."
The article explores how West Virginia's increasingly elderly population impacts society, from community engagement to tackling Alzheimer's, fighting loneliness and end of life care. More information is forthcoming on both of these critical issues that impact communities, our workforce and our economic lifelines.
