Family care eases workforce strains

A top barrier to workforce participation is the deficit in dependent care – from infants to the elderly – that force employees to miss work or leave the workforce. As more national employers note the importance of child care, West Virginia employers are speaking out and stepping up.

The economics of current for-profit day care models operate on razor thin margins or fail to remain operational. We must consider alternatives to providing reliable care. See the op-ed by Toyota's Leah Curry below as she speaks to the importance of federal funding. And learn about how Hardy County employers stepped in to help local care givers. It is time to look at innovative models of care to allow parents to balance work and family.

WV Forward will be providing data, emerging solutions and economic models to address these needs. Stay tuned for 2019 work, including:

1) regulatory ideas,
2) economic models,
3) mapping care locations and deserts in pilot areas,
4) immediate care expansion options in targeted areas and
5) showcasing creative solutions like Hardy County's team approach.
