China Energy Investment Corp. Ltd., one of the world’s largest energy companies and a long-time research and development partner of West Virginia University, announced an agreement that will bring $83.7 billion to the state Thursday. The signing of the memorandum of understanding between West Virginia and China Energy in Beijing was witnessed by President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The last couple of years have not been good for West Virginia’s economy, with the decline of the coal industry, ongoing state budget deficits, population loss, etc. But North Central West Virginia has weathered the storm, and all key indicators point to an optimistic future for the region.
Brian Anderson, the director of West Virginia University's Energy Institute, called a memorandum of understanding signed Thursday between the Mountain State and China the “biggest single investment in the history of the state.” Anderson said he thinks the agreement, if finalized, could potentially have a big economic effect on the state.
China Energy, a longtime research and development partner with WVU, announced an agreement that will bring an investment of $83.7 billion to West Virginia. West Virginia University Energy Institute Director Brian Anderson said the investment will be used to help develop the proposed Appalachian Storage and Trading Hub, along with other projects that can develop the state’s natural gas infrastructure and lead to plastics manufacturing.
