West Virginia Commerce Secretary Woody Thrasher said President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariff on steel should not derail China Energy’s plan to build $83.7 billion worth of ethane crackers, power plants and related shale natural gas infrastructure. In November, Thrasher joined Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing to sign the memorandum of understanding for the Asian firm to invest in West Virginia’s Marcellus and Utica shale field. Tuesday, Thrasher gave an update on the endeavor while speaking to attendees at the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association conference at Oglebay Park.

The conference was organized by the West Virginia Manufacturers Association in partnership with the Independent Oil and Gas Association of West Virginia, along with the West Virginia Oil & Natural Gas Association. The event’s keynote speaker was Steve Winberg, the U.S. Department of Energy’s assistant secretary for Fossil Energy.

The nearly-$84 billion deal between West Virginia and China’s largest energy company, China Energy, was announced last November. Since then, few details have emerged since West Virginia Commerce Secretary Woody Thrasher and China Energy President Ling Wen signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing as part of the US-China trade mission during President Donald Trump’s November 2017 visit. Thrasher said he is hopeful the first project associated with the China Energy deal will be announced soon.
