West Virginia University President Gordon Gee delivered his Fall State of the University Address Monday afternoon. He said the point of Monday's speech was to remind everyone that the university belongs to the people of the state and that there is an obligation to make the state better by the teaching, research and service that is provided. He also acknowledged the challenges West Virginia faces while emphasizing the opportunities it has before it.

West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee: “As a university, how can we best help our state move forward?” Gee delivered his annual State of the University Address, presenting his plan for the university to contribute to the state of West Virginia, aptly named “West Virginia Forward.”

Some of President Gee's main focuses for the future of the University, and the state as a whole, are economic security, education and healthcare.

West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee said the school must accept its role in leading the way towards a better economy for all West Virginia during his annual State of the University address. Gee also touted West Virginia Forward, a new program that brings together the state Chamber of Commerce, WVU, and Marshall University in an effort to do precisely what he talked about during his address: create a better West Virginia for West Virginians.

Economically and culturally, things certainly have been better in southern West Virginia. Still, optimist and Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert believes the best for region is yet to come. In his 20th month as president, Gilbert is focusing the university on helping the region improve. In his presentation during the West Virginia Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Economic Summit last week, he announced an alliance with other higher education institutions in southern West Virginia.

West Virginia University has joined with the state Department of Commerce and Marshall University for a comprehensive study on what can be done to leverage the state’s inherent strengths and current businesses to turn the tide. West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee shared the West Virginia Forward initiative with state business leaders on Thursday, August 31, at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s 81st annual Meeting and Business Summit at The Greenbrier.
